It serves both beginners with no prior experience and experienced technicians seeking certification. A basic understanding of telecommunications is helpful, but formal prerequisites are not required for entry-level programs.
There are no formal prerequisites for beginner fiber optics courses, but learners should have basic technical awareness of networking concepts. It is recommended to complete the free Fiber U Basic Fiber Optics online course before enrolling. No prior hands-on experience is required, as foundational skills like splicing, termination, and testing are taught during the program.
Fiber optics training prepares for the FOA CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) certification, which validates knowledge and skills in fiber optic technology, installation, and testing. The exam covers fiber types, optical theory, safety, cable handling, splicing, connectorization, loss testing with OLTS and OTDR, and adherence to industry standards such as TIA and ITU-T.
The FOA CFOT exam consists of 100 multiple-choice, matching, and true/false questions, with a passing requirement of at least 70 correct answers. The exam duration is 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the delivery method. Certification is valid for three years and can be renewed for $100 without retesting if the holder remains active in the field.
